Whereas the City of Cornwall recognizes the significant environmental, economic, and social benefits provided by healthy urban forests, including air and water purification, carbon sequestration, temperature regulation, and recreational opportunities; and Whereas clear-cutting and other destructive forestry practices can have severe and long-lasting impacts on the environment, including soil erosion, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. Now therefore, be it resolved that Administration prepare a report on the requirements to establish permitting processes for clear-cutting and removal of significant trees within city limits to ensure that the environmental and social impacts of the removal are minimized through mitigation measures and replacement planting. Now be it further resolved that the City of Cornwall will work collaboratively with community partners and stakeholders to develop and implement education and outreach programs that promote the value and importance of urban forests, and that encourage sustainable and responsible forestry practices in our city and inform Council where significant City-owned trees must be removed.
